Closing a treatment gap current guidelines don't cover.
TARGET is a five-year clinical trial across Kenya and Tanzania testing whether two antibiotics reduce death and hospitalisation in children with acute watery diarrhoea and malnutrition — a group WHO guidance doesn't currently address.
Earlier trial data suggest this group benefits most from treatment, yet WHO guidance doesn't currently recommend antibiotics for watery diarrhoea.
TARGET is built to close that evidence gap.
What we're doing

Enrolling 2,800 children across Kenya and Tanzania.

Lab testing to identify which children gain the most from treatment.

Testing whether the findings hold in other settings, and studying how climate change could shift disease and antimicrobial resistance patterns.

Mapping how diarrhoea is currently treated and by whom.

Translating trial results into guidance decision-makers can use.

Training the next generation of trial leaders in Kenya and Tanzania.
